Every growing product eventually feels the pain: five shades of the brand green, three button radii and a component library nobody trusts. The fix is not another Figma file. It is a system with governance.
Tokens before components
Start with design tokens: color, spacing, radius, typography and motion. Tokens translate one to one into code variables and themes, which means a rebrand becomes a configuration change instead of a six month migration.
The adoption rule
A component that nobody uses is dead weight. Adoption has to be easier than rebuilding. That means excellent documentation, copy paste examples and, critically, a small team that responds to feature requests within days.
A design system is a product. Its users are your own teams. Treat them like customers.
Governance that works
- One decision maker per platform, one shared backlog.
- Versioned releases with changelogs, just like any library.
- Deprecation windows so old patterns die on schedule.
- Quarterly audits that delete more than they add.
When we build products at ByteHexa we ship the system and the product together from sprint one, because the second UI is always cheaper than the first.
