The OWASP Top 10 reads like a technical menu, but every item maps directly to business exposure. Translation helps founders prioritize without reading code.

The business dictionary

Broken access control means one customer can open another customer data. Injection means hostile input reached your database. Security misconfiguration means defaults were never changed. Vulnerable components mean a library you never audited carries a known exploit.

Where to spend first

Authentication and access control deliver the most risk reduction per dollar. Single sign-on, hardware backed multi factor, least privilege service accounts and quarterly access reviews eliminate the majority of realistic breach paths.

Most breaches are not genius attacks. They are known doors that nobody locked.

The founder checklist

  • Ask for dependency audit reports in every release summary.
  • Require a third party penetration test before enterprise launches.
  • Keep an incident runbook and rehearse it twice a year.
  • Log enough to reconstruct any incident, and protect those logs.

Security maturity is now a sales asset: enterprise buyers check it during procurement. Treating the OWASP list as a roadmap turns a compliance chore into deal velocity.
